Noordkaap Tour - Closing Part

Het Hof, 3311XG Dordrecht

After a European tour to Munich, Istanbul, Cologne, Budapest, and Lisbon, Noordkaap is coming home with an extensive overview exhibition in October. A selection of artworks that was created during the tour, will be on view in Dordrecht for two weeks. Various locations in the city center set the stage for international exchange between the artists and you! With guided tours, performances, film screenings, and more.

For the exhibition the concept of REMOTEWORDS is being expanded into a virtual game: a large-scale, individually accessible satellite picture of the exhibition premises invites each visitor to cover one roof with a message. The statements are forthwith applied to the satellite picture. Visitors can contribute statements on issues such as urbanity, navigation, digitality, virtual simulation and city (urban) space.

At predetermined times, remote-controlled drones will fly over the 15 x 13 m walk-around satellite picture. The pilotless aircraft is equipped with a CCTV system that, during its flight, relays live images of the area below onto a projection wall. The live image is practically indistinguishable from a real flyover-video of Dordrecht.

gateways. Art and Networked Culture
Opening reception: Friday, June 1, 2012, 7 pm

The House of Electronic Arts Basel presents a selection of works from the exhibition gateways. Art and Networked Culture, which was shown at the Kumu Art Museum as part of the European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011 programme, from 13 May to 25 September 2011.

The exhibition presents artists whose work deals with the changing conditions of a networked world – a world increasingly transmitted through media. The artistic works presented use various means to tackle the theme of gateways that lead to realms of action and experience in our digitally interconnected culture, while reflecting on the societal and cultural changes brought about by digital media and a global Internet culture. Through the artists’ use of electronic networks and mobile technologies, the public is encouraged to participate actively and invited to engage with new and unaccustomed experiences in perception.
The exhibition was realized in collaboration with the Goethe Institute. Curated by Sabine Himmelsbach

Noordkaap / 1. City Munich
Adiós Holanda-Noordkaap on tour
WhiteBOX (Munich) from June 24th until July 9th, 2011

Noordkaap is taking on Europe! Noordkaap is an artist-run organization from Dordrecht, the Netherlands, that investigates and translates current issues in society into an engaging, activist, visual art program for a broad audience. From 2011-2013 Noordkaap investigates the influence of populist movements in European society.

In seven cities (respectively Munich, Istanbul, Cologne, Budapest, Lisbon, Brussels and Rotterdam) a series of exhibitions will be realized, with artists producing new work on location. The participating artists are encouraged to respond to local phenomena, folk customs and current social developments.

Noordkaap invited REMOTEWORDS to join the Europe tour and to use the roof of the container, that travels from city to city. REMOTEWORDS will connect the container with specific locations in each hosting city during the two year tour.

The message begins with "I'm.." on the roof of the container – momentarily parked in front of the art space "White Cube" in Munich. The sentence will be continued on the roofs of the upcoming locations.

Hacking the City –

Interventions in public and communicative spaces

The Book

The project "Hacking the City" took place on the occasion of the "European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010." Twenty museums collaborated in a multifaceted common series of exhibitions called "Mapping the Region." Museum Folkwang contributed with an experimental project which went far away from traditional museum activities. More than thirteen projects in public space, a "Base-Station" in the museum and a homepage (www.hackingthecity.org) were realized.

"Cultural hacking" does not only mean voicing criticism, putting up resistance or even exposing an opponent's faults—it also signifies innovation.

The reader includes a richly illustrated documentation about all activities and text contributions by artists and theorists, like Boran Burchhardt, Brad Downey, Sabine Fabo, Matthew Fuller, Dagrun Hintze, Anke Hoffmann, Christin Lahr, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Achim Mohné / Uta Kopp, Richard Reynolds, Felix Stalder, Annette Schemmel, Sabine Maria Schmidt, Jörg Steinmann, Michelle Teran, Annette Wehrmann and Georg Winter.

gateways
Art and Networked Cultures

Curator: Sabine Himmelsbach

The exhibition gateways. Art and Networked Culture introduces a young generation of artists whose work deals with the changing conditions of a networked world – a world increasingly transmitted through media. The artistic works presented here use various means to tackle the theme of gateways that lead to realms of action and experience in our digitally interconnected culture.

The artists invited by the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with the Kumu Art Museum as part of the program for Tallinn, European Capital of Culture 2011, use electronic networks and mobile technologies to encourage active public participation and to transmit new perceptual experiences.

REMOTEWORDS - REDEFINDING AN URBAN LANDSCAPE

The exhibition project "REDEFINDING AN URBAN LANDSCAPE" extends the concept of REMOTEWORDS into a virtual game for the people of Johannesburg to participate in. A huge satellite image to walk into invites the visitor to mark a roof of his choice and take part in reshaping the urban landscape around ARTS on MAIN. The focus is the transition of Doornfontein and the rapid change of the urban landscape, forced by evictions and relocations in former times, nowadays by transformations as a result of the abolition of apartheid structures. The blog www.remotewords.net contributes to the discussion.

District in Johannesburg named after REMOTEWORDS message #8

The district around Main and Berea Streets in the Johannesburg district “Doornfountain” was given a new name after a message by REMOTEWORDS and Niq Mhlongo. In February 2009, REMOTESWORDS—in collaboration with the South African writer Niq Mhlongo and Jozi art:lab (Johannesburg)—wrote on the roof of “Arts on Main”, then under construction, the message: Maboneng. “Arts on Main” meanwhile, along with galleries, offers known artists such as William Kentridge a studio and for several weeks has provided an off-space for Goethe Institute: GoetheonMain
Maboneng means “place of light” and is a quotation from Niq Mhlongo’s novel “Aftertears”. Mhlongo, who grew up in Soweto during the apartheid era, has made a name for himself with his descriptions of present-day life in the former ghetto. Thus Maboneng not only thematizes an aspiring district in Johannesburg that is to be given a shot in the arm by a colony of art, but is above all a reminder of those who for a very long time were prevented from standing tall in the light.
