The schoolyard of the Max Ernst Secondary School in Cologne Bocklemünd has a message: ...Max, der Ernst des Lebens... /...Max the earnestness of life...
The phrase was developed in collaboration with the students and refers to the school’s name giver and to Dadaist sound poetry. Almost every child in Germany begins his school career with the portentous words: Now life starts in earnest…

For the Moscow Biennale 2011, the concept of REMOTEWORDS is being expanded into a virtual game: a large-scale, individually accessible satellite picture of the exhibition premises (TSUM) invites each visitor to cover one roof with a message. The statements are forthwith applied to the satellite picture. By means of REMOTEWORDS’ blog, virtual visitors from around the world can contribute statements on issues such as urbanity, navigation, digitality, virtual simulation and city (urban) space.
At predetermined times, remote-controlled drones will fly over the 15 x 8 m walk-around satellite picture. The pilotless aircraft is equipped with a CCTV system that, during its flight, relays live images of the area below onto a projection wall. The live image is practically indistinguishable from a real flyover-video of Moscow.

Noordkaap is taking on Europe! Noordkaap is an artist-run organization from Dordrecht, the Netherlands, that investigates and translates current issues in society into an engaging, activist, visual art program for a broad audience. From 2011-2013 Noordkaap investigates the influence of populist movements in European society.
In seven cities (respectively Munich, Istanbul, Cologne, Budapest, Lisbon, Brussels and Rotterdam) a series of exhibitions will be realized, with artists producing new work on location. The participating artists are encouraged to respond to local phenomena, folk customs and current social developments.
Noordkaap invited REMOTEWORDS to join the Europe tour and to use the roof of the container, that travels from city to city. REMOTEWORDS will connect the container with specific locations in each hosting city during the two year tour.
The message begins with "I'm.." on the roof of the container – momentarily parked in front of the art space "White Cube" in Munich. The sentence will be continued on the roofs of the upcoming locations.

REMOTEWORDS has inscribed the word ASYL! on the roof of the former customs house in Aachen-Köpfchen at the German-Belgian border. The exclaimed outcry stands for "safe haven" and reminds us that the law of asylum is not a mere modern line of defense but a basic democratic right.

The Kumu Art Museum in Talllinn was marked with "CLICK HERE". Estonia’s constitution guarantees its citizens a right to Internet access. "CLICK HERE" highlights the Estonians’ trust in the democratic structure of the Net that here also manifests the freedom of art. The fake link, however, also shows that links in the world wide web can very well include duplicities.

REMOTEWORDS#15 was part of the exhibition project "Hacking the City" which took place at the Museum Folkwang Essen and all over the City of Essen. "Hacking the City” is a project reacting to changing structures in the public, mobility and communication in the city. The "Unperfekthaus" in Essen has been marked within the exhibition project Hacking the City. The message "!=CTRL" refers to open source computer languages like Linux. "!=" is used as a negation or not-operation. Thus "!=CTRL" means not controlled or uncontrolled.

Read the interview with Mario Ramiro on Vilém Flusser’s time in Sao Paulo

Remotewords presented the projekt “PORQUE DUVIDO” (Why do I doubt?) on Escola de Comunicacoes e Artes Universidade de São Paulo. “PORQUE DUVIDO” is taken from Flusser’s book On Doubt (Da Duvida) that was written in Brazil in Portuguese and published in German in 2006 by European Photography. The essay already contains several ideas and thoughts on his later media theory that he developed, among other writings, in “Towards a Philosophy of Photography” and “Ins Universum der technischen Bilder”.

The roof of the jozi art:lab which enables the collaboration with Johannesburg was marked ARTMIGRATION. Migration seems to be the key factor of Johannesburg’s history – anytime since the foundation in 1886 people deliberately moved and were moved, constant change seems to be the motor of the city and its people.
